TEXAS REDISTRICTING

Updates and News about the 2011 Redistricting Cycle in the Lone Star State. This website's goal is to try to make sure the redistricting process is as transparent and accessible as possible to the public. Hopefully, it will be of some use to a broad range of interested parties, both lawyers and non-lawyers. Have questions, comments, suggestions, additional content, or a redistricting joke (or two)? County associations today proposed a handful of changes to the election schedule adopted by the San Antonio court before the Christmas holiday.  The changes would:

  • Give counties until February 20 (rather than January 31) to redraw precinct boundaries, if needed,
  • Suspend the need for counties to have new precinct boundaries precleared under section 5 of the Voting Rights Act,
  • Give counties until March 9 (rather than February 13) to issue new voter registration certificates,
  • Give counties until March 9 to send out mail ballots to military personnel and overseas voters, notwithstanding requirements of the federal MOVE Act.

The county associations also told the court that the deadlines and dates in the court’s order might have to be revisited if the ultimate maps were not ‘substantially similar’ to either the state’s maps or the court’s interim maps.
