TEXAS REDISTRICTING & ELECTION LAW

Updates about ongoing redistricting litigation in the Lone Star State and coverage of election law more generally. This website's goal is to try to make sure the redistricting process and litigation over voting law is as transparent and accessible as possible to the public. Hopefully, it will be of some use to a broad range of interested parties, both lawyers and non-lawyers. Have questions, comments, suggestions, additional content, or a redistricting joke (or two)? Judge Gregg Costa has set a hearing for Wednesday, August 8, at 4 p.m. to take up the State of Texas’ request that he stay his order suspending portions of Texas’ voter registration laws.

That order, entered last week, enjoined elections officials from enforcing five provisions, including a ban on performance-based compensation, a requirement that deputy voter registrars be Texas residents, a ban on returning completed applications by mail, and a requirement that deputy voter registrars be separately deputized and trained in each county.

Judge Costa directed that responses to the state’s request for a stay by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, August 7.
